Frescobaldi Wine Lovers' Experience
Step into the heart of Tuscan wine tradition with a visit to the historic Frescobaldi estate. Explore the grounds and savor a curated tasting of their finest wines.
The Castle of Nipozzano is one of the historic estates belonging to the Marchesi de' Frescobaldi, a family with over 700 years of winemaking tradition. Dating back to around the year 1000, the castle was originally a defensive fortress. Today, it stands at the center of renowned wine production, especially known for its exceptional Chianti Rufina DOCG wines.
Not far away lies Pomino, a smaller yet historically rich area nestled in the hills. Sitting at elevations of up to 700 meters (around 2,300 feet), Pomino’s cooler climate and high altitude give rise to wines that are fresher, more aromatic, and lighter in body than the typical Tuscan reds.
Pomino also has a prestigious winemaking legacy. It was included in the world’s first official wine region classification in 1716, commissioned by the Grand Duke of Tuscany—long before the French AOC or Italian DOC systems. In the 19th century, the Frescobaldi family was also among the first in the area to experiment with international grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Merlot, inspired by French winemaking techniques.
