Although right in the heart of Florence, Palazzo Vecchio is built in the style of a typical country castle, as it was the dominant style in the 13th-14th century Florentine civil construction of palaces used for important public offices.

Born in the late 13th century as the workplace of the Priori and the Gonfaloniere di Giustizia, Palazzo Vecchio was enlarged over the following centuries to suit its many purposes, as the Medici's private apartments, or house of the Parlament when Florence was shortly named the capital of Italy.
